Guidelines, procedures, and required documentation for reactivating inoperative or dormant accounts as per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directions.

ACCOUNT CLASSIFICATION

Classification of Inactive & Inoperative Accounts

An account may be classified as inactive or inoperative/dormant when there are no customer-induced transactions for the prescribed period.

An account is generally treated as inactive after 12 months of no such transactions and reclassified as inoperative beyond 24 months, with restrictions then applying to cheque book usage, debit cards, and digital banking access.

Customers can reactivate their dormant or inoperative account as per RBI guidelines by visiting the branch and submitting fresh KYC documents in original.

HOW TO AVOID THIS

Preventive measures to keep your bank account active

Customers are advised to maintain regular activity in their accounts through any of the following convenient practices:

Operate Periodically

Operate your accounts periodically by carrying out eligible financial or non-financial transactions initiated by you.

Standing Instructions

Set up Standing Instructions for regular transactions in the account, wherever applicable (such as utility bill payments or recurring transfers).

Digital Banking

Activate and use Mobile Banking and Internet Banking facilities for convenient and continuous access to banking services.

RESTRICTIONS IN AN INOPERATIVE ACCOUNT

Operational safeguards applied until the account is reactivated

To protect depositors from unauthorized transactions and identity misuse, the following services/transactions may be restricted in an inoperative account:

Cash & ATM Transactions

Cash transactions through the branch counter and ATM withdrawals are restricted.

Internet & Mobile Banking

Outward transactions and debit operations through Internet and Mobile Banking are put on hold.

Cheque Books & Debit Cards

Requests for cheque book issuance, new/renewal Debit Cards, and other deliverables cannot be processed.

Account Modifications

Services related to modifications in the account (contact details, mandates, etc.) are paused until reactivation.

HOW TO ACTIVATE A DORMANT AND/OR INOPERATIVE ACCOUNT

Standard reactivation procedures based on your account status

STAGE 1
Dormant Account

A dormant account can be activated by carrying out any customer-induced transaction whether financial or non-financial, through the branch, ATM or any other permitted mode, as applicable.

  • Financial transaction: Cash deposit, ATM withdrawal, or fund transfer.
  • Non-financial transaction: Balance inquiry or mini statement through ATM/Mobile Banking.
STAGE 2
Inoperative Account

An inoperative account may be activated by submitting KYC form for updation/reactivation along with the applicable valid KYC documents at any Branch.

  • Visit your nearest Meghalaya Rural Bank branch in person.
  • Carry original KYC documents for in-person verification.
  • Submit the signed KYC updation / reactivation request form.

LIST OF KYC DOCUMENTS

Required documentation for identification and address verification

The customer may be required to submit applicable KYC documents for the purpose of identification and/or address verification, as required under the Bank’s KYC policy and applicable guidelines.

For Individual Customers
Officially Valid Documents (OVDs)

Applicable documents may include:

  • Voter ID Card
  • Driving Licence
  • Passport
  • Proof of possession of Aadhaar Number (as issued by UIDAI)
  • PAN Card
  • NREGA Job Card duly signed by an officer of the State Government
  • Letter issued by the National Population Register containing details of name and address
For Non-Individual Customers
Entities, Firms, Trusts & Companies

Applicable documents may include:

  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • Partnership Deed
  • Memorandum of Association (MOA)
  • Articles of Association (AOA)
  • Registration Certificate
  • Trust Deed
  • Officially Valid Document(s) in Respect of Person Authorized to Transact
  • Resolution Of Board / Managing Committee
  • Power Of Attorney Granted to Its Manager, Officers or Employees to Transact on it
  • Other applicable constitutional or registration documents
In Cases Involving a Change of Authorised Signatory

The customer may also be required to submit, as applicable:
